Orange Shirt Day Beading: Threading & Discussion
September 30th marks the Canadian recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, acknowledging the history and intergenerational harm caused to Indigenous peoples and communities by the Canadian Residential School System.
Join us in-person for a two-day workshop hosted collaboratively between Indigenous Initiatives UTSC and the Doris McCarthy Gallery. Learn the basics of flat stitch beading to create an Orange Shirt Day pin to commemorate those who survived and those who did not come home from Canadian Residential Schools. Our aim is to engage with a supportive learning community to gain insight into the importance of Orange Shirt Day though participation in a beading and conversation circle facilitated by Indigenous staff. No prior beading or sewing experience is required. All materials will be supplied.
Please note that this workshop takes place on September 17 & 24. Only one registration is needed, along with a commitment to attend both days. If you are no longer able to join, please contact us and we can open the space to another participant. Contact brittney.jaikaran@utoronto.ca
