Flag Raising & Teaching for Orange Shirt Day and National Day of Truth & Reconciliation
Survivor Flag Raising
Each year, September 30th marks Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day recognizes and honours both the survivors and those who did not come home from Canadian Residential Schools. It is as an opportunity and invitation for non-Indigenous people to prioritize learning, interrogating the past, and deepening one’s understanding of residential schools and the intergenerational impacts they have had on Indigenous peoples and communities in Canada.
On Friday, September 20th at 10 AM the University of Toronto Scarborough will raise the Survivors Flag at the UTSC flagpole (outside the Arts & Administration building). Elder Josh Eshkawkogan will share his teachings around truth and reconciliation. Staff from Indigenous Initiatives will be on hand with education materials, resources, and a rich library resource list including books for expanding Indigenous learning. On September 30th, flags will be at half-mast honouring the children that never made it home.
No registration is needed just come by and join the learning.
